RICK STEIN AT COOGEE BEACH
THE TERRACE
Open weekends this spring. Saturdays and Sundays, 12pm to 5pm, weather permitting. Walk-ins only.
THE SPACE
Rick Stein at Coogee Beach has a terrace. It sits above Arden Street, looking out to Coogee Beach, with long tables under umbrellas and ninety seats.
It has its own menu, shorter and more relaxed than the restaurant's, and its own drinks list. Oysters, prawns on ice, fish and chips, cold wine and beer, cocktails for the afternoon.
Through September it opens on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. From October it opens Friday to Sunday, with live music on the weekend.
THE FOOD
The menu takes its cue from the fish shop. Sydney Rock oysters, freshly shucked. Prawns on ice to peel at the table, with a bowl of Marie Rose. Fried fish and chips with tartare and malt vinegar, and a chip-shop curry sauce for the traditionalists. Calamari fried hot and quick. A fish burger. Tempura scallops, crumbed abalone, sashimi. Beef fat chips with curry sauce for dipping. And a minute steak with Café de Paris butter, for whoever didn't come for fish.
Most of it is made for sharing.
THE Drinks
Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot by the glass. The Brokenwood Rick Stein Semillon blend from the Hunter, and the Rick Stein White Burgundy. Bondar rosé from McLaren Vale. A chilled pinot noir from Orange. Spritzes, a Negroni, sangria red or white, and the house signatures, a Coconut Margarita and a Mandarin Gimlet among them. Hahn Super Dry and Stone & Wood on tap.
